Shooting threat at Montclair High results in police involvement

Freshman allegedly threatened another with knife and has access to gun - allegedly planned shooting with death list

Posted

A freshman boy attending Montclair High School is being reported by numerous sources at the school to have allegedly threatened another student with a knife and also allegedly reports allegedly he said he would "shoot up the school". The anonymous sources also said he has a "death list".

These sources said they fear for their safety and would not share their names. The entire incident may have been triggered by missing Air Pods.

The school alerted police and notified families yesterday that there was a threat at the school.

At this time, 5:00 AM, parents of numerous students are not sending their children in to school today.

Kids at school were warning one another and sharing his image just in case something happens - creating an environment of fear.

The school worked with the police department and patrols will be on site all week.

Allegedly the gun(s)in the student’s home are owned by a parent. Police protocol calls for making sure weapons are safely secured, which means they are NOT removed from the home by law.

Letter follows here and UPDATES to follow.

Greetings Montclair High School Family:

We are working with our students who are engaged in unhealthy and disturbing threats via social media and/or in-person communications. Some families have requested more detail on the District protocol once a threat has been confirmed. We want you all to be aware that the protocol is as follows:

Students are immediately suspended from school pending both a risk assessment and threat assessment.

Concurrent with #1, we notify the police, and it is standard protocol to have the police to immediately search the child's home to ensure there is no access to weapons.

We notify the Board and the parents/guardians of the issue(s) at hand.

Upon student clearance, we closely monitor the student's return to the school community.

This protocol was followed today, and our Montclair Police Department colleagues have determined there was no credible threat. However, we take these matters very seriously. To that end, thank you for your active and sincere engagement. The safety of our students and staff is top priority. While we believe that the protocol above has addressed any risk from this morning's threat, we also understand that some students may feel more comfortable with visible signs of increased support from our colleagues in the Montclair Police Department. Therefore, we have for additional exterior patrols for the remainder of the week. We hope that provides an additional sense of security.

Enjoy your evening,

Anthony Grosso, Principal
