Police have received a number of complaints regarding phone fraud involving PSEG. Police Chief Strumolo urges residents to contact PSEG directly if anyone representing to be from there are seeking payment.

If you sell any item/s on the internet, DO NOT accept a check for more than the item was agreed to be sold. DO NOT deposit checks that have instructions to send a portion of that check to another location. The checks are fraudulent and you WILL lose money from your account.

8/11/18

*****Fraud – Headquarters received a walk in report regarding credit card fraud. The victim stated that they found several charges on two of their credit cards that were not made or approved by them. The financial institution sent a notification that there was a high balance on one of the cards and the victim checked and found over $8,000.00 in charges. The charges seem to have been made in the Wayne and Paramus areas. The cards have been canceled and an investigation by the credit card companies has been initiated.

******Property Damage – Bloomfield Avenue - Officers responded to the area where they were met by a homeowner who stated the flood waters during the flash flood storm traveled down North Spring Garden Avenue onto Bloomfield Avenue and down their driveway (which is downhill) into the garage. A foot of water caused damage to their garage door, air conditioners, lawn mower, and other miscellaneous personal belongings.

*******Suspicious Incident – East Centre Street – Response was made to a residence in regards to an explosive washing machine. The homeowner stated that they heard a loud bang in the basement and when they went downstairs they observed their washing machine exploded and sent shrapnel throughout the basement. The machine had heavy structural damage on the top and was obliterated. The ceiling also had damage from the incident. There were no report of injuries and the Nutley Fire Department responded to the scene and made it safe.

******Shoplifting – Franklin Avenue - Multiple Units responded to the area regarding a shoplifting in progress.

The male party was found to be in possession of an item belonging to the store that had been partially removed from its packaging. The suspect did not identify himself when asked by Police numerous times, was taken into custody, and transported to Headquarters. The suspect identified himself as Kaili Richardson, 36, of Montclair. He was charged with shoplifting. The summons was given to Mr. Richardson and he was released from custody with his Court date.

*********Suspicious Incident – Officers spoke with a homeowner that wanted to report that they received three bills from a company stating that they owe $162.93 for an order placed in February. The victim never made a purchase from the company and they requested a Police report of the incident so they can further investigate

*******Fraud – Headquarters received a walk in report regarding fraud. The victim stated that they placed two Invicta men’s watches on the

Letgo” app and were sold to a party that has not finalized their payment. Emails have been received from Western Union but payment has not arrived. It is believed that the victim may have been scammed and a report was made to document the incident in the event Identity Theft issues arise. An attempt was made to contact the actor/s with negative results.

********Motor Vehicle Stop – Route 21 – Officers initiated a motor vehicle stop that resulted in the arrest of Robert F. Porter, 48, of Paterson, for outstanding warrants out of Paterson, Prospect Park, and Belleville Townships. He was transported to Headquarters without incident where the jurisdictions were contacted. Mr. Porter was released on his own recognizance from both Paterson PD and Prospect Park PD and provided his new Court dates. Belleville PD was advised and responded to Headquarters to take custody of Mr. Porter. Nutley Police issued motor vehicle summonses for Driving with Suspended License and Unlicensed Driver.

*****Shoplifting – Franklin Avenue – Store Managers witnessed a customer at the register pay for two items in their cart but not the remaining two items. When questioned regarding the other items they stated they were free from a return that was made at the return desk. The party could not provide a receipt and the return desk had not authorized said transaction. Oreste Milano, 71, from Bloomfield, was taken into custody and transported to Headquarters without incident. The Assistant Prosecutor authorized charges for Shoplifting which were placed on a complaint. He processed, and advised of his Court date before release.

*******Commercial Burglary Arrest- Police investigating several burglaries to Nutley Doctor Offices identified 38 y/o Kareem Hawkins of Newark as the suspect. He was arrested in Union for similar burglaries and wanted by several other jurisdictions. He was charged with Burglary in Nutley and presently detained in Essex County Jail.

******Business Burglary Arrest- Bloomfield arrested 43 Eric Porsch of Bloomfield for burglarizing commercial businesses. While in custody he was identified as the suspect wanted for a Nutley E Centre St Burglary where he allegedly smashed the glass window, entered the establishment and made off with cigarettes and cash. He was charged with burglary and presently being detained in Essex County Jail.

******Burglary to Auto Arrest- Police were called to several residences in September of 2016, when several suspects entered dozens of vehicles. During that time police were able to obtain evidence that linked a juvenile suspect that was recently arrested in Kearny for CDS. He was charged this week in Nutley with burglary to auto for the 2016 offense.
