Police have received a number of complaints regarding phone fraud involving PSEG. Police Chief Strumolo urges residents to contact PSEG directly if anyone representing to be from there are seeking payment.
6/2/18
******Hazardous Condition – Wilson Street - Officers along with Nutley Fire units responded to the area regarding a report of a hazardous condition. Upon arrival the homeowner stated that they put a snow blower to the curb when gas starting pouring out of the cap due to it not being secure. The Fire department personnel cleaned the fluid from the roadway. No further action taken.

*******Burglary – East Centre Street - Police units responded to the area in regards to a burglary. The business owner was alerted to a smashed door by their newspaper carrier. Officers found the east side glass door was smashed and access to the store was unobstructed. A detective responded to process the scene. The neighboring businesses were checked and found to be in tact with no signs of burglary or tampering. The Detective Bureau is continuing the investigation.
******Intoxicated Party - Franklin Avenue – Headquarters was advised of an unwanted party who was intoxicated at a local establishment. Officers responded and found the actor in a severely intoxicated state. Nutley EMS was contacted and responded to the scene to evaluate the party. It was necessary to transport the male to the hospital but he became combative with Officers. Harpeet Singh, 38, of Nutley was charged with Disorderly Conduct and Harassment. While at the hospital and in the process of receiving medical treatment, he kicked Officers and was additionally charged with Aggravated Assault on Police Officer he was transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility.
6/4/18
*****Theft – Chestnut Street – Headquarters received a report of a theft. The victim stated that they purchased items worth close to $3000.00 online and they have not received them to date. Upon checking with the company they stated the box was delivered and signed for, but not by the victim. Officers also tried to make contact with the company, with no results. The Detective Bureau was advised of the incident.
****Theft – Franklin Avenue – Officers responded to the area on a report of a package theft. Upon arrival they spoke with the victim who stated that when they arrived home they found their package opened with the contents missing from the inside. Detectives investigating were able to identify 58 y/o Albert Youssef of Paterson, and arrested him on 6/7/18. He was found to be wanted out of Morris County and had multiple alias’s He was transported to Essex County Jail

********Theft – Howard Place – Response was made to the area on a report of a theft from vehicle. The victim stated that when they returned to their car they noticed the vehicle’s center console and glove box had been rummaged through. It was disclosed that the vehicle was not locked during the overnight hours. The Detective Bureau was contacted and responded to process the vehicle.
******Suspicious Incident – Washington Avenue – Officers responded to the area regarding a report of an activated burglar alarm. Upon arrival the front gate was observed to be unsecure and several doors to the establishment were open. The building was cleared by Police, the owner contacted, who responded and completed a walk through with Police. Everything appeared in order. No further action taken.
******Suspicious Incident – Passaic Avenue - Multiple Officers responded to the area on a report of a bomb threat. Units immediately set up a perimeter and began to evacuate the complex. The victim stated that they received a phone call from a male that stated to them: "there's a bomb in your house ". The Detective Bureau was on scene and took over the investigation. Additionally, Detectives along with a K-9 partner from the Essex County Sheriff's Bomb Squad responded. They tracked the apartment, several packages in the area, and all of the common areas with negative results. An additional Detective from the Essex County Bomb Disposal Unit responded and conducted a further evaluation with negative results. All residents returned to their homes.
6/6/18
*******Fraud – Headquarters received a walk in report regarding fraud. The victim stated that they received an email on their college email for a job opening. The job was for a personal assistant position at a construction company. A resume’ was sent and the victim received the job. After a few days of online work, the victim was sent a check from their superior for $2580.00 for their first week’s pay. The boss only communicated through text message. Instructions were sent with the check that asked the victim to deposit the entire check and to take the remaining money ($250.00) for themselves. At that time the boss instructed to put $100.00 onto gift cards, scratch off the bar codes and forward pictures of the front and back of the gift cards to the boss via email. The brank manager of the financial institution contacted the victim and stated their account was in the negative, due to a fraudulent check. When the victim tried to contact the boss via telephone they received a busy tone and the call would automatically disconnect. The financial institution requested a Police report be made for investigative purposes. Officers tried to contact the boss via phone with negative results. A message was left for them to contact Headquarters. The fraudulent check was entered into evidence.
******Hazardous Condition- River Rd. Police and fire responded to a hazardous condition, and found that a resident attempting to repair a dishwasher caused a water pipe to rupture causing significant flooding conditions to their unit and the unit below causing them to become uninhabitable. Emergency workers were able to get the water turned off and safeguard the residence.
*******Suspicious Person – Franklin Avenue – Officers were directed to the area regarding a party yelling by the bus stop. The party was described as a white male wearing camouflage pants, who was located, and appeared to be in need of medical attention. Nutley EMS was called to the scene and transported the party to the hospital. A family member was contacted and advised of same. Nothing further.
6/7/18
********Theft – Alexander Avenue - Response was made to the area regarding a report of theft. Upon arrival, Officers were advised by the homeowner that they observed two males removing a dryer from their driveway. The homeowner stated that they were discarding the dryer, but was more concerned that two parties came onto her property.
*******Dog at Large Edgewood- a woman walking a dog along Edgewood fended off a large Siberian Huskie by using her feet. She reportedly was walking a client’s dog when the Huskie escaped its confines. The owner was able to secure the dog and contain him, when he escaped again and charged the woman and smaller dog. At this point, the woman sprayed the dog with HALT dog repellant, causing him to return home where the owner was able to wash the repellant from the dog’s eyes.
********Fraud Attempt- A resident reported that they received a call from a person identified as James Marshal advising that they won a million dollars and a Mercedes Benz. However, the resident would first need to send money to Mr. Marshal to secure the winnings. The resident did not send the money and reported incident to police.
*****Suspicious Incident- Police stopped to check on a vehicle along the shoulder of RT 21, and observed the windshield smashed. Further investigation determined that the breakage appeared to have been caused from the inside out. Questioning the driver it was determined he smashed his own windshield because of an argument he was having.

******** Theft Plymouth Rd- A resident reported that he mailed a check to the IRS and later received a delinquent notice from them. Further investigation revealed a third party that possibly “Fished” the check from a mailbox and changed the name cashed the check. Police are investigating.
*******Arrest on Warrant- Franklin Ave. Police observed a man walking along Franklin Ave while consuming an alcoholic beverage. He was stopped and found to have an outstanding warrant. Fifty five year old Alfred Ziegler was arrested issued a summons for consuming an alcoholic beverage in public and later released.
