Caldwell Public Library to Host Nanny Diaries' Authors Tonight

Whether you’re a mom, a kid, a babysitter, or just someone who is fascinated by the merry go round world of parenting, you will have heard of ‘The Nanny Diaries’.

Co-authors Nicola Kraus and Emma McLaughlin, who turned their own experiences into not only a bestseller but also a hit movie with ‘The Nanny Diaries’ have just published their fourth book, ‘The Real Real’.

Tonight, right here in the borough, the Caldwell Public Library is hosting a reading and question and answer period with these two dynamic, hip novelists.

And these two friends are really looking forward to meeting readers of all ages at the library, especially because their latest book is all about the real – as in Real – world of MTV.

“It’s the story of a high school senior, Jessie, who lives in the Hamptons full time,” explained Kraus. “She’s a local, and her mother cleans houses, while her dad managers a restaurant. Jessie will be the first person in her family to go to college.”

McLaughlin said the plot revolves around what happens when MTV decides to choose Jessie for their new reality show – with the promise of a college scholarship.

“Her reality is made over,” said McLaughlin. “This book is a satire of the teen MTV reality television genre.”

being thrust into the spotlight – indeed entering a new reality – is something both authors know something about. When their book ‘The Nanny Diaries’ hit it big, so did their media presence. And, in true story book fashion, it happened overnight.

“We had multiple inspirations for this book,” said Kraus. “Partially, it was based on our own experience of being 27-years old and suddenly, unexpectedly doing media. We both felt unprepared for it. It was like one day, we woke up and we were on ‘The View’.”

With their newfound fame and successful method of working together as authors, the two young women became fast and loyal friends.

When asked how they wrote as a team, they both laughed and said it was natural.

“We have never written novels by ourselves,” said McLaughlin. “We’ve been doing this together. It’s our tenth year. It’s a process we stumbled upon, when we were doing ‘The Nanny Diaries’.”

When asked what advice they might share with young writers who wished to emulate their success, they both said help was available – literally- at every writer’s fingertips.

“Blogs are a great place for kids to get experience for writing regularly,” said Kraus.

McLaughlin agreed.

“So many agents and publishing companies now look at blogs to troll for the next big thing,” said McLaughlin.

Tonight, visitors can meet both authors at 6:30 p.m. at the Caldwell Public Library, free of charge.

Their new book, ‘The Real Real’, is already becoming the darling of readers of all ages.

“Although we called it young adult, it really is a crossover book,” said Kraus. “We have been surprised to have readers of all ages, who seem to be enjoying it. We’ve had readers from kids to their twenties to their sixties.”

And, as Kraus added, “We wrote the book we would want to read and also have on the beach with us.”

As per their expectations on what it would be like to care for their own children, both Kraus and McLaughlin said they had yet something else in common.

“Having children is part of our joint plan for 2010,” said Kraus.
